April 25th is the birthday of both Guglielmo Marconi and Edward R. Murrow, two giants in the world of radio. In their honor, some photos from my weekend visit to the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting in St. Louis Park, MN. (more…)

Have already ridden more than 30 times this year, mostly home from work. But today it was time for the first bike excursion of the year, looking for signs of spring from Monona to Waunakee and back. (more…)

Every three years the ministry I work for sponsors a student missions conference to help college students and others discover what God is doing in the world, and how they can be a part of it. For many years the conference was held on the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign campus, and came to be called Urbana.
Urbana is an incredible experience and a little bit overwhelming. It was at Urbana where I first heard the phrase, 36 years ago, “it’s like trying to take a sip from a firehose.” (more…)
Living in Wisconsin my entire life still has not been enough time to see all of the amazing features of this beautiful state. Despite having lived in Oshkosh at one time, I have never visited Horicon Marsh, the nation’s largest freshwater cattail marsh and one of the Seven Wonders of Wisconsin (allegedly, I haven’t been able to find the complete list yet).
So last Saturday my friend and colleague Jonathan Rice joined me as we reconnoitered this beautiful natural resource for North American migratory waterfowl. (more…)
Along with 76,532 other people, Sam, Anne & I witnessed the Badger football team bounce back from last week’s loss to Alabama with a convincing home opener against Miami of Ohio. Final score 58-0, and Miami was held to -2 yards rushing.
It was Labor Day, 1913, when a rising star in the journalism world hopped a train in his hometown of Freeport IL, arriving a short time later in Madison at this depot. He was going to have a routine medical procedure, a tonsillectomy, before leaving for his first job after graduation from the University of Wisconsin. Tragically, the operation went bad and he died on the operating table. He was the second national president of Sigma Delta Chi, now known as the Society of Professional Journalists. Ever since, SDX/SPJ has awarded the highest annual honor bestowed on members in the name of their second president, the Wells Memorial Key.
Plans for a memorial centennial ride fell through, but last year I was able to complete the Madison to Freeport ride with my good friend Cameron Mooney.
This year I felt another ride coming on, and with a pre-ride yesterday, from Deerfield to Aztalan, was actually able to cover the same distance (about 64 miles) over two days. (more…)
One of the unique aspects about living in a city like Madison is the wonderful opportunity to easily make friends with future global leaders in business, education, government and other fields who come to study at the University of Wisconsin. (more…)
Last winter I began thinking about a road trip to Idaho to visit our son Drew and his family. Then when he told us they had decided to move back to Georgia, I knew time was running out to visit Idaho. So I volunteered to help with the move. That resulted in an epic road trip involving 1700 train miles, about 2600 truck miles, 1150 air miles, and 300 car miles for a grand total of about 5750 miles, through 14 states in 12 days. (For comparison purposes, NY to LA and back is 5600 miles.)
In the first post of this series, I detailed my cross country train ride. If you’re just coming in, that’s probably where you should start. The latest post covered the first half of the truck trip, from Idaho to Wisconsin, where we caught our breath for a few days. And then it was time to complete the journey. (more…)
