Growing up along the Mississippi River a half century ago, eagles were a rare site. Occasionally we would be driving along The Great River Road and my dad would point out eagles soaring high above the bluffs. Today it’s much easier to see eagles along the Mississippi. In late winter, as the ice is breaking up, they’re all around Prairie du Chien, my home town.

Summer is a great time for a road trip, and a summer wedding is an even better reason. This has been kind of a regular thing most of the past few years.
Final Summer Excursion
The last adventure of this summer was a project that was on my to-do list for several years, riding the four connected bike trails through Wisconsin’s Driftless Region: the 400, Elroy-Sparta, the LaCrosse River Trail and the Great River Trail.

Last winter I began thinking about a road trip to Idaho to visit our son Drew and his family. Then when he told us they had decided to move back to Georgia, I knew time was running out to visit Idaho. So I volunteered to help with the move. That resulted in an epic road trip involving 1700 train miles, about 2600 truck miles, 1150 air miles, and 300 car miles for a grand total of about 5750 miles, through 14 states in 12 days. Wisconsin’s Second Oldest City
My friends Jim and Cathy Stevens were intrigued by a public television program about Prairie du Chien, so I offered to give them a guided tour. They brought their grandson Caden along and we spent the day enjoying some of Wisconsin’s most beautiful scenery.
Our first stop was one of the scenic attractions of Iowa County, Hyde’s Mill. (more…)
