The story of my 2023 Alaskan adventure began in 2018 when I accidentally ran into KICY radio station manager Patty Burchell at the Urbana Student Missions Conference.

We had a conversation about radio and before I knew it I had sort-of volunteered to help out the radio station in Nome when they are short-staffed during March high school basketball tournament time.

It took 5 years but finally in early 2023 I found myself in…Anchorage. My Anchorage-Nome flight was cancelled due to bad weather at the Nome end.

The delay gave me a chance to check out the Alaska Museum and educate myself on Alaska’s unique culture.

The next day I was on my flight to Nome, passing Denali in the distance.

Nome from the air (as depicted in the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum) with the snow-covered Norton Sound in the foreground.

Museum display highlighting the legendary 1925 serum-run that showcases Alaska’s dog-sled heritage and foreshadows the famous Iditarod dog-sled race. Fritz, one of the heroes of that run, featured.

View across Nome roofs from the library/museum to a cloud bank over the Norton Sound.

Highlight of the first weekend in Nome, brilliant Aurora Borealis.

Road trip into the countryside. The road only goes for about a dozen miles in the winter.

Snow removal is a regular occupation when the streets need to be cleared with another snowstorm on the way.

If you don’t clear the snow it just piles up.

Inside, I’m starting to get the feel for being back live on the air.

And enjoying being on the morning show with colleagues Nate and Carlee Hobbs.
During my time in Alaska, I also enjoyed watching the annual Iditarod. But that’s another story.
Your narrative and photos have a way of making me feel like I’m there with you.
