With the Ice Age National Scenic Trail a couple of miles to the west and the University of Wisconsin Arboretum a couple of miles to the east, it’s not difficult finding a nice place to hike on a gorgeous fall morning. One morning in 2022 I took my camera along to the Arboretum.

After 2 years of COVID and other exigencies mitigating against extended travel, it felt good to finally get on the road for a short vacation out east. Usually I try to leave early enough to get through Chicago before rush hour, but this time I left later and navigated Chicago at mid-day. Traffic wasn’t too bad.
Adding a few more miles to my Ice Age Trail Travelogue, today I joined the trail in Janesville.

The neat thing about the Ice Age Trail in Janesville is that it intersects with Janesville’s extensive network of recreational trails. So I was able to bike 20 miles and walk one mile. It’s not exactly at the halfway mark of the trail.
In my younger days, when we lived on a farm, I always enjoyed the chance to go with a truckload of grain to the mill in town. That mill ran on electricity. Earlier mills built by the first European settlers ran on water power and one of those mills has been restored and is open for visitors in a Rock County park just west of Beloit.

First stop is the Creamery, which serves as the Visitors Center and souvenir store.
Exodus 1 and Exodus 2: getting through all of the homeward bound hoops out of Jordan and then out of Israel proved to be a sticky wicket.

The border crossing was additionally complicated by the COVID protocols but we finally made it back to Israel from Jordan.
The next morning we awoke to see where we had landed.

Our accommodations looked like Bedrock City, from the Flintstones. We were in fact in Wadi Rum, where a number of movies have been filmed, including Lawrence of Arabia and The Martian.
It was time for a change of scenery.

We headed east, back through the Wilderness of Judea, where we saw lots more sheep and shepherds.
Another full day of unraveling the secrets of Jerusalem.

We started at the Western Wall of the Temple Mount.
Another day to explore Jerusalem found us at another gate of the Old City, Herod’s Gate.

It was early and Herod’s Gate was already a busy place.
