A couple of big writing and editing projects have kept me from traveling as much as I would like this summer but now that they’re done it was time for another road trip. I had a yearning to ride amongst the trees and a friend recommended Hartman Creek State Park for its fine off-road single track bike trails, so I headed off towards Waupaca.

The sign could’ve been a little larger, but soon I found the right path to begin my ride.

A short ride later I was at the Trailhead.

Lots of twists and turns on this trail.

Not a lot of time for scenery watching, had to keep my eye on the trail.

In some areas it was just a path through the woods. But there were lots of curves to negotiate and a lot tree roots, which could be very tricky.

I was the only one on the trail, as far as I could tell, and I saw no wildlife. But there were deer tracks in some of the sandy spots.

Oh, and I met one fungi.

Then I came to a fork in the road and had to make a decision. Stick to the easy track or try the more difficult track. Since I was the only one around, and there were no witnesses to my potential embarrassment, I decided to take the challenge and try the more difficult track.

The navigation was a little trickier but not a lot more difficult.

The sandy stretches were larger, and without a fat tire bike, very challenging.

This section also had jumps that were more challenging than just tree roots.

And I met one more fungi.

I declined the most difficult section of the track, 7 miles and two hours had just about worn me out.

Do you know the muffin man? I do not. But I’ve seen his truck, as I left Hartman Creek State Park.

Nearby Hartman Creek is Spencer Lake Christian Center, where my cousin Lynn Jerrett is a staff volunteer. I stopped by for a visit and a tour.

Last stop of the day was Mishler’s Country Store, along the north edge of Columbia County. A farmer was raking hay across the road.
Look like nice trails, Gordon. Kudos to you to ride them with “skinny” tires.
