On the Trail of a Cave

My hiking partner, Tom, and I have enjoyed several of the scenic trails at Governor Dodge State Park and decided it was time to tackle another one, the Cave Trail. This trail had a feature not shared with the other trails in the park: a cave.

The Cave trail follows along one of the streams in the park.

The stream is dammed to create a beautiful artificial lake.

The lake was quiet and the sky was beautiful.

Like other trails in the park, the Cave Trail has dramatic rock features.

Eventually, after several miles, we deduced that we were nearing the cave.

The bat sign indicated that the cave was a protected habitat.

The cave was blocked but we inspected the entrance carefully.

The cave was blocked to enter but we inspected the entrance carefully. The entrance may be the most interesting part of the cave. After all, inside caves are basically the same, dark.

We were rewarded with a beautiful view of the distant Blue Mounds, another State Park.

along the way we observed some sinister sign-eating trees.

An astute short cut got us back to the beginning of the trail more quickly, which we were glad about. And along the way we observed some sinister sign-eating trees.
