The last Saturday in April found me awaiting the start of the annual Crazylegs Run on the capitol square, an 8k route (5 miles).

This was a first for me, running an officially sanctioned race, #1331 on my racing bib. Just ahead of me, in Area D, son Sam, who was going to be running at a little faster clip.

Ahead of me, about 8,000 runners. So it took a while to make our way onto Carroll Street, heading towards the starting gate.

Approaching the starting gate, high fived Bucky Badger; this year’s Grand Marshall, Alando Tucker; and a number of other Badger athletes, including Brad Davison.

Finally, about 10:15am, the race begins for Section E. Here goes.

I managed to run as far as Lisa Link Peace Park before slowing to a walk to catch my breath. Reached the end of State Street and turned right onto Park Street.

Greatly appreciated all those who cheered us on, including Mr. Tooth.

The first mile marker came into view halfway up Bascom Hill, a steep challenge.

Looking back, I was glad to see I wasn’t the last runner.

Going downhill on Observatory Drive went more smoothly.

Finally reached the turnaround, just ahead of the 3 mile marker.

Was feeling parched when the water station came into view, perfectly timed. More greatly appreciated volunteers.

Another encouraging volunteer: Uncle Sam, nearing the 4-mile marker.

Finally the last stretch of Breese Terrace, and Camp Randall came into view.

Time for the dramatic entrance onto the field at Camp Randall!

Crossed the finish line with a time of just under an hour and a quarter (accounting for the delayed start). Official time was 1:12:20 at a rate of 14:30/mile, placing 99th out of 104 men in my age class.

Reunited with fellow InterVarsity team members in section R at race’s end. Some were runners, some were walkers, hats and T-shirts made the outfit.
Wasn’t quite as wiped out as I felt the week before, after my 14-mile walk, and feel well-prepared for next month’s 40-mile walk. I just may do this Crazylegs thing again next year.
