Another adventure begins as the train rounds the bend and approaches the Columbus Amtrack station.

A sunny fall day and the trees may be a little past peak color.

First stop, Milwaukee. My seatmate got off, after two days on the train from Seattle.

And not long after, Chicago was in view.

Union Station, between trains.

Waiting for the Capitol Limited.

By the time we left, night had fallen.

The darkness was broken by a few stops at quiet stations in Indiana and Ohio.

The next day we awoke to a cool, frosty morning in the Pennsylvania mountains.

The train wound along snaking rivers and through mountain passes (and tunnels).

I was glad to walk through the door to Sara’s house.

Saturday morning was a beautiful time for a walk.

Audrey climbed…

And Lana sat.

And then we stripped the bark off of a sycamore tree. Sycamore’s have unusual bark, and I can remember doing the same thing with the sycamore tree in my grandma’s front yard when I was their age.

And then I shot some baskets. After six, I said, “We’ll leave when I hit ten. How many more is that?” And they both agreed it was four more. Audrey did the math in her head.

Then it was time to get ready for the Fall Festival at church.

Audrey is an owl, so she has to get her bird feet on.

Right away we saw a princess.

…and a football star. Wait, that’s me.

Part of fall festival is Trunk or Treat, and some of the trunks are pretty scary. Red Riding Hood, for instance.

The marshmallows for Smores cooked in about 20 seconds because the fire was so hot. And they were good!

When you’re sushi, smores are more of a challenge.

The band sounded pretty good too. Ryan was playing guitar with the band.

Later there was pumpkin carving…

…and story time.

Not everyone was feeling healthy, so we stayed home and watched the Sunday morning church service via the internet live stream. I call this, Arrangement in Black and Gray.

After games of Go Fish, watching videos on You Tube, and one last lunch together…

…it was back to the train station in Martinsburg for the trip home.

The next morning I finally got some time in the lounge car to watch some scenery.

The steel plants in NW Indiana were impressive.

Lot’s going on, on a busy Tuesday morning.

We passed the southern tip of Lake Michigan.

And soon the Chicago Skyline was back in view.

I caught the bus to Madison from Union Station, and caught another bus from the UW campus to work, and was back on the job by mid-Tuesday afternoon. But what a fun trip! Visiting granddaughters is always fun!
