Before our trip to Japan we were dismayed to read the weather forecasts and to see them filled with cloudy, rainy days. But it wasn’t so bad. Then, when our last day in Izukuni dawned (previous article on this page) bright and sunny, we rejoiced with an early morning excursion around the neighborhood.

Early morning jaunt.

Others were out enjoying the beautiful morning, and Mt. Fuji (35 miles away) was finally visible.

Anna and I both got in a bike ride.

The rice fields appeared ready for harvest.

Taking a break.

Then it’s time for Anna to go to school.

Anna likes to stop to pet Sakara at the gas station on the corner. Sakara is a long-haired, miniature dachshund, just like our Abby.

The bus arrives and Anna is off to school.

We are off to visit a Buddhist Temple.

Inside the temple.

Mika’s family has this burial plot.

Brian and I next head to Izunokuni Panorama Park, up the mile-long aerial tramway.

Stunning view of Mt. Fuji when the weather is clear.

Despite appearances, the hot water foot bath was quite soothing.

On the descent we saw more of the rice harvest taking place.

In the afternoon we visited Anna at her school.

Kindergarten students welcome a diversion for a few minutes.

The School is operated by the Buddhist Temple next door.

Discussing theology with a Buddhist priest.

At the end of the day, waiting for our train, as we leave Izunokuni.

By the time we got to Tokyo, it was rush hour.

Last day in Tokyo, I ventured by myself to Ueno Park, where many of the best Japanese museums are located. One of the entrances is through this historic gate.

The first museum presented historic art works chronologically.

The archaeological museum had a reminder of animals back home.

Then I decided to visit the open air market I noticed across the street.

Lots of delicacies for sale, including crab.

And, I think, eel.

Then back through the Tokyo train station.

Waiting for the airport bus at the hotel.

Waiting for the Olympics at the airport.

First stopover: Los Angeles.

One more stop in Minneapolis and then we were gliding right over our house in Monona as we arrived back in Madison.
